BSP Hydraulic Fittings

BSP (British Standard Pipe) hydraulic fittings are pipe threaded connectors designed according to the British Standard and are widely used in hydraulic systems, industrial piping and high pressure fluid transmission. Its design focuses on sealing, durability and standardization, and has become one of the international common connection scheme.

Classification and application of BSP hydraulic fittings

1. BSPP (parallel pipe thread)
Characteristics : Cylindrical straight thread, tooth angle 55 °, pitch is usually 19 teeth / inch (such as 1/4” BSPP pitch of 1.337mm), through the gasket or O-ring to achieve sealing.
Application: Suitable for low and medium pressure systems, commonly used in hydraulic pumps, valves and other non-sealing connections, corresponding to the Chinese standard G thread (such as G1/4).

2. BSPT (conical pipe thread)
Characteristics: Taper 1:16, thread angle 55°, self-tight sealing by taper, no need for additional seals.
Application : High-pressure or high-temperature environments, e.g. ultra-high-pressure hydraulic tools (working pressure up to 400 MPa).

3. Other variants
BSPF: BSPF (British fine thread) for general joining without sealing.
International standards: Japan’s JIS (PF), Germany’s DIN (R/K), ISO (Rp) and others.

1. Size range
Nominal diameters range from 1/16“ to 6”, common sizes include 1/8“, 1/4”, 3/8“, etc. in 1mm or 1/16” increments.
Example: 1/4” BSPP has a large diameter of 13.157mm and a bottom hole size of 11.6mm.

2. Pressure Rating
Regular BSP fittings are suitable for 10~70MPa systems, while ultra-high pressure quick couplings (such as 1/4BSP) can withstand 400MPa pressure.
Special design fittings (e.g. Parker 5X series) support up to 36,250 psi (approx. 250MPa).

3. Material Selection
Metallic materials: Carbon steel, stainless steel (corrosion resistant), copper (good thermal conductivity).
Non-metallic materials: PVC U (lightweight, chemical resistance), commonly used in low-pressure environments.

1. Seal type
Plane seal: realized by O-ring or metal washer, such as BSPP fittings.
Taper seal: rely on thread taper self-tightening, such as BSPT fittings.
Compound sealing: some fittings support double sealing design (e.g. BSPP male threads can be adapted to BSPT female threads).

2. Structure form
Straight, elbow (45 ° or 90 °), tee, over-board joints, etc., to meet the complex piping layout.
Quick coupling design: connect/disconnect without tools, suitable for frequent operation of ultra-high pressure system.

1. Selection points
According to the pressure, the nature of the medium to choose the material (such as high pressure selection of stainless steel, corrosive environment selection of PVC U).
Confirm that the thread type (BSPP/BSPT) is compatible with the supporting equipment to avoid mixing NPT and other incompatible standards.

2. Installation specification
Torque control: over tightening may damage the threads, it is recommended to use a torque wrench.
Sealing treatment: BSPP need to add a gasket or sealant, BSPT rely on taper fit.
